One of my favorite things to do in life, is to help others define the right colors for their painting project. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to work with a client's daughter named Paige. For the sake of her adorable bossy nature, I am referring to her as a general contractor in this story. My client, Brian S. and his Wife asked me to swing by to evaluate another home project for them. This time it was to be their daughter's bedroom. I remember that upon my initial impression I could tell that she already had a few color ideas in mind. As soon as I arrived at their home she hurriedly walked me upstairs to see her bedroom. The walls were the original "builders white" and were ready for a makeover. I needed to be at her level, so she turned on her mini lamp, and we sat down on the floor. "I want Yellow!" she said excitedly. Her dad grinned with happiness at her excitement from the doorway. "Ok, lets look at some yellows"... "I also want Pink!" "Two colors?" her dad asked. "yes!". "NO problem" I calmly said, and began to open color selection options for her. "Did you know that there are many many pinks?" as I showed her so many shades of pink. Her eyes got wide as she looked and explained that she did not know that there was more than one pink. "Would you like me to narrow it down to a few?" I asked. "Yes please" she responded.
Once I selected a handful of fun pinks and yellows I showed them to her, and her immediate response was "I want them both on the same wall!". "I'm sorry Paige, that is not possible" her dad softly said. "Oh, its very possible" I explained. "I am an artist, and I can do a color blend from pink to yellow to incorporate her request!"Paige jumped up with happiness, and her dad asked how. this could be done.. Once I explained the process, he gave us the go ahead, and we set the plan in motion.
As I worked on this project it was so fun to incorporate my knowledge of color blending, and to have the opportunity to show Paige how to work with two colors at once. I truly enjoy watching others experience a "light bulb moment" and can only hope that this experience showed her that there's normally several ways to do things..
Ultimately her parents bought her new bedding, and other decor to complete the look, and further hired me to do more artistry painting for future projects (will discuss in the next blog!).
I feel like we all have an innate childlike awe of the impact of color in our environment, and a need to see our wishes come true. I have been joyfully providing that experience to all clients for 28 years, and look forward to helping you on your next project!
Here is the written testimonial from my client:
"After Laura did a great job on our kitchen, we brought her back to paint our 8-year-old daughter's room. She spent significant time with her picking colors and going over ideas. When Laura was done, the room was beyond anything that we could have imagined -- a yellow to pink fade out from one corner over two walls. It is beyond stunning.
Also to her credit, Laura followed up on a few minor touch up issues, and then painted a shelf to match.
Wonderful in all respects."
Yours Truly,
Laura Michelle
